When we remodeled our house, I knew I wanted a pot rack in my kitchen. Two of the lights in our house are ‘original’, and I wanted the new lights to mesh with the old. I looked for a long time, and finally found a pot rack that I loved. However, it wasn’t long before my baseball loving boys turned my pot rack into the most expensive hat rack ever.
Both of my big boys are catchers. Since they spend the majority of the game grubbing around in the dirt, the boys end up with hats so filthy the original colors can hardly be detected. Somewhere along the line, they picked up the idea that baseball players cannot wash their ball caps. Sadly, my darling husband supports this lunacy, and declares that no baseball cap in our home shall be laundered. I have washed my hands of this situation, but refuse to have these dusty, grimy hats hanging in my kitchen.
We needed a compact way to store several hats, and it needed to be easy for the boys to use. If it required much effort at all, I knew the hats would go right back in the kitchen. I came up with a simple and inexpensive solution to our hat problem. All the materials can be found at a home improvement or discount store
Materials: curtain rod with brackets, shower curtain rings, s hooks, (I used size #7 x 1-1/2 in) screw driver, paint (optional), level (optional)
Step One: If you can find the materials in an agreeable color, save yourself some time and purchase everything in the color/finish you want. If not, paint the curtain rod, brackets, shower curtain rings and s hooks
Step Two: Mount the brackets on the wall, using the level if you have one. String the shower curtain hooks onto the curtain rod, and place the curtain rod into the brackets
Step Three: Hang s hooks on the shower curtain hooks, and hang hats on the s hooks
So far this has worked for us. It fits quite a few hats (both adjustable and fitted), and the boys can easily use it. I hung it right above the coat hooks in their room, so all their outwear is together and can be put on/off easily.
I’m enjoying my hatless kitchen, and the baseball caps are all in one place, and easy to find.
